Sometimes a simple yes or no is not good enough. You want to make sure the message is clearly understood. In times like that you say, "That's affirmative, or that's negative." Such was the case when we sailed our catamaran into Israel after sailing up the Red Sea and navigating the Suez Canal. We needed to be understood the first time.
THAT'S AFFIRMATIVE
You don't just sail into Israel like other countries. You must run a security gauntlet before you even get inside the twelve mile limit.
We had just finished sailing up Pirate Alley and a two month voyage in the Red Sea before we entered the Mediterranean. Since we had never visited Israel in our travels, it was a good time to pay a visit from the sea.
It requires several days to sail from Egypt to Israel, but the sailing is the easy part. It's the last forty miles that get your attention. When you arrive twenty miles off the coast, the Israeli Navy takes a real interest in what you are doing, and they are not fooling around. They are deadly serious.
Once you are twenty miles offshore, the Navy comes up on the radio and starts asking questions. Although they don't say the name of your vessel, they call out to you using your precise lattitude and longitude. The dialogue goes something like this: "Yacht at latitide 1234 longitude 1234, identify yourself. What is the name of your vessel? What was your last port? In what country is your vessel documented? Are you carrying any passengers? How many crew are on board? What is the name of each member of the crew? What are their nationalities? What are their passport numbers? What is your destination?"
Once they have all your information, you think you are done, but the fun has just begun. In about ten minutes the navy calls up again and asks the same questions. You better give the same answers, or there will be problems.
You don't mind repeating the answers to the same questions the second time, but the third and fourth time they call up and ask the same questions, you begin to get a little irritated.
You get very specific when they ask the same question. You start spelling things out using international phonetic alphabet. You say things like, "The name of my catamaran is Exit Only - spelled Echo Xray India Tango Oscar November Lima Yankee."
Instead of responding yes and no, you say "That's Affirmative" just to make sure they are getting the message. A simple yes or no is not adequate when there is a possiblity that bullets may start flying around your boat.
If you have all the right answers, the Israeli Navy gives you permission to come within twelve miles of shore. That's when things get really interesting. A gun boat comes screaming over the hoizon directly toward your yacht. On the bow of the boat is a sailor with a fitfty caliber machine gun pointed directly at you. The gun boat circles your vessel several times at high speed determining if you are a threat and deciding whether they are going to put divers in the water to inspect the underside of your yacht.
While this no-nonsense encounter is occuring, it's a good idea to answer their questions with the words, "That's affirmative or that's negative," just to be sure they understand what you are saying.
If they don't blow you out of the water, and if they decide you are not a threat, they give you permission to sail the last twelve miles into Israel at the port of Ashkelon.
Your encounter with the Israeli Defense Force gives a whole new meaning to the words, "That's affirmative."
GETTING IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME WHEN YOU TALK TO YOUR MIND
When you talk to your mind, you need to get it right the first time.
You don't want your mind talking back to you saying, "Say what?"
Instead, you want your mind to say, "That's affirmative."
