PROGRAMMER'S MANUAL FOR YOUR MIND

Your beliefs are the programs that you run in your mind.

Beliefs are all important. If your beliefs are right, your world is right. If your beliefs are wrong, your world is wrong. Your beliefs make all the difference.

Your beliefs describe how you look at yourself and your world. They dictate what is possible and what is impossible. Even if your beliefs are false, they determine the outcome of your life.

For most people, the beliefs that they have when they are twenty years old become their road map for life. Their beliefs remain static for the rest of their days. People who realize their dreams are experts at selecting beliefs that make their dreams possible. They change their beliefs whenever it helps them realize their unlimited potential for excellence.

CHOOSING YOUR BELIEFS WELL

Your beliefs are the single most liberating or limiting factor in your life.

During the first twenty years of life, you collect your beliefs in a haphazard manner. The lottery of life deposits a mixture of positive and negative beliefs in your mind. Random events determine whether your beliefs are empowering or disempowering. The beliefs you inherit from other people become the backpack of limitations that you carry through life.

Your beliefs form the basis of your actions since you only act on those things in which you really believe. When you carry around a large parcel of beliefs that you do not accept, you experience inner conflict. If you act like you believe in something when you really do not, inner turmoil occurs.

To have inner peace, your behavior must be congruent with your beliefs. If you have two opposing beliefs about the same thing, you always lose. No matter which behavior you choose, it’s in conflict with one of your beliefs. This is a lose-lose situation. The only way you can win is to have one empowering belief and act on it. When there is congruence between your beliefs and your behavior, powerful changes happen.

If you are to advance in the direction of your dreams, then each belief you hold must become a conscious choice. People who live their dreams choose their beliefs carefully. If you allow the dreams of others to dominate you, then you have to work in their belief system. The only way to be truly free is to choose your beliefs and live by them. If you are not careful, you will capitulate your dreams and take up the secondhand dreams of others who believe more strongly in their dreams than you do in yours.


ONE PLANET – MANY WORLDS

The amazing power of belief accounts for the diversity of cultures on planet earth. You don’t need to blast off in a space ship and travel to another galaxy to discover a new world. If you board an airplane and fly to a different country, you find an entirely new world with different values and beliefs.

Imagine that an alien spacecraft approached planet earth. It then sent three probes to investigate whether life existed on the planet. There would be three monumentally different representations of life on earth when reports came back from Mecca, Saudi Arabia, Tokyo, Japan, and San Francisco, California. The leaders of the aliens would think that their shuttle craft had made trips to three different planets. Reality is massively different in all of these locations. Religion is different. Family and social relationships are different. Climate and geography are different. Values are different. Dress is different. These three locations are so different that when the report went back to the mother ship, it would appear that these space explorers visited three different worlds. Indeed, they had. All of them were authentic worlds operating with different belief systems. All of these worlds interpret reality in a substantially different manner. On a smaller scale, each of us lives in our own personalized world, living out our own reality determined by our personal beliefs.

ERRONEOUS BELIEFS

Not all beliefs have the same level of importance. Many of your beliefs are erroneous, but because they are trivial, they don’t adversely affect your life. Believing the moon is made of cheese doesn’t matter unless you land on the moon in a spacecraft, or unless you are looking for food sources beyond planet earth. This is a trivial erroneous belief that has no adverse impact. Trivial beliefs are not core beliefs. Core beliefs have a major influence on the outcome of your life. Usually trivial beliefs are not worth the effort of changing. Core beliefs are different. It’s essential to have excellent core beliefs.

The closer a belief addresses who you are, the stronger you cling to it, and the more difficult it is to change. The closer the belief is linked to your identity, the more emotion is attached to it. Your beliefs about yourself form a nucleus around which you organize your personality. When you try to change a core belief, it’s like undergoing a heart transplant. The experience is traumatic, and you don’t enter into it lightly. You vigorously resist changing beliefs about who you are and what you are capable of doing.

Most people don’t bother changing the erroneous beliefs inherited from their parents and culture. It takes too much time and effort. It’s much easier to surrender to your inherited beliefs.

Erroneous beliefs create major detours on the path to your dreams. In one sentence, I can enumerate sufficient erroneous beliefs to derail you for a lifetime and guarantee instant membership in the Life Long Disoriented. Here is the sentence: “I am my job, grades, hair-do, complexion, muscle mass, age, sex, skin color, lack of hair, nationality, performance, socioeconomic group, weight, height, clothes or shoes.” This amazing sentence describes everything that a consumer-oriented, performance-oriented, and image-oriented society uses to describe you. Businesses and advertising make billions of dollars on this sentence. If you believe this sentence, you may as well give up the reprogramming effort right now. There is no hope for you. However, if you look at this sentence and realize how far it misses the mark, then it’s time to work on your core beliefs, and make sure they are positive.


ONE KEY BELIEF

In one sentence, I can state a key belief around which you can build your life, and it will take you all the way to your dreams. Here is the sentence: “I AM WHAT I THINK ABOUT ALL DAY LONG.” Whatever you accomplish, you accomplish it first in your mind. Whatever you are, you are it first in your mind. Whatever you become, you become it first in your mind. What you think about all day long determines what happens in your life.

WHEN I CATEGORIZE YOU, I NEGATE YOU

The world has very little constructive to teach you about your identity. This isn’t an accident. When they label you black, white, yellow or red, the world categorizes you in order to negate you. When they categorize you in this manner, they imply that the color of your skin somehow reveals what is inside. They negate you because you are not a color. You are a human being, and your color doesn’t reveal anything about the way you think and run your mind.

The world points to your nationality to describe what it means to be you. It categorizes you in this manner, and then dismisses you to a type of group behavior determined by nationality. You often hear statements like, “It is not surprising that he acts in that manner, after all, he is American, German, British, or Italian.” Again, this is a massive act of negation. All Americans don’t think in the same manner. Neither do all Germans, British, or Italians. You are a human being, and the nationality of your brain doesn’t reveal the way that you think or run your mind.

You are not your manner of dress. The way you dress reflects your culture and some aspects of your self-image, but it’s not who you are. When you judge people by the clothes they wear, you negate them. They are not their clothes. Some people prefer to dress up, and others prefer to dress down. Acceptable clothing varies substantially from one region of the world to the next. In the west, men would not be caught dead wearing a dress. In the Middle East, men wear a dress all of the time, and they call it a thobe. How you dress is more a reflection of your culture than it is a reflection of who you are on the inside.

There is no thing, event, or experience that reliably reveals who a person is. There is only one way to tell who a person is. Get down inside their mind and look at the thoughts they think. When you know their thoughts and the way they use their mind, you have an indication of who they are. This makes it difficult to get to know anyone. You have to spend a long time with them and become a soul mate. If you are not a soul mate, you should not characterize them with external labels. Your assessment will be wrong, and you will negate them as well.


EMOTIONS CREATE THEIR OWN REALITY

Many beliefs are erroneous and unreliable. Some beliefs are based on insufficient knowledge or data of poor quality. Overriding all of this is an emotional component that makes changing beliefs nearly impossible. Many irrational beliefs are resistant to change because they are so charged with emotion. The emotional content is so powerful that emotion forms an impenetrable barrier surrounding the belief and prevents it from being reached and changed. Emotions create their own reality, and that reality is often stronger than irrefutable logic.

Not all beliefs are created equal, and those that are charged with emotion are the hardest to alter. The voice of reason whispers while the voice of emotion shouts. It’s not that reason is weak. It’s because emotion is so strong that changing emotional beliefs is exceptionally difficult. Just because it’s difficult doesn’t mean it’s impossible. You simply have to work harder to make it happen.

Beliefs make the world go round. They determine the course of history and the outcome of your life.

Never underestimate the power of your beliefs. Beliefs create saints and demons, heroes and cowards, winners and losers, war and peace.

An idea whose time has come can change the world.

A belief whose time has come will change your life.
