The journey out of the Land of Depression is like an uphill climb that never seems to end. You just keep moving forward and climbing upward hoping that soon you will come out at the top.

When I drove up the Moqi Dugway, it was a long trip with lots of curves, gravel, and blind corners. If you make a mistake, really bad things can happen. But I made it to the top more than once. Every time I make the trip, I am relieved to arrive at the top.

Driving out of the Land of Depression can be like going up the Moqi Dugway. You have to remember that if you keep on keeping on and make good choices, you will eventually make it to the top. Just because it is a long upward climb does not mean it is impossible. You have to keep moving forward and not surrender to fear and despair, and eventually you will conquer your depression.


BACK TO THE BASICS OF HEALTHY THINKING

When you look at a newborn baby, you don't see any signs of depression or anxiety. God gave that baby a clean mind and a pure heart, and it takes years of thinking toxic distorted thoughts to arrive at the place where anxiety and depression compose a significant portion of its thought life. It requires years of training to become a miserable unhappy human being.

When you have been thinking negative and limiting thoughts for twenty years, you should expect to experience some anxiety and depression. On the other hand, when you start thinking positive thoughts, the chemistry of your brain shifts in a positive direction, and you start feeling better.

You are responsible for the chemistry of your brain. You create it by the type of thoughts you think during the first twenty years and subsequent years of your life. You can create the chemistry of depression and dysfunction, or you can create a brain chemistry that predisposes you to joy, a positive attitude, and achievement. If you don't like your present chemistry, you can change it by changing what you put into your mind.

You need to get back to the basics of healthy thinking. You must stop polluting your mind with toxic waste and start filling it with good things.

Altering your brain chemistry with pills isn't enough. You need to change what you are putting into your mind. You need to change what you say when you talk to your mind.

Now is the time to accept responsibility for your mood and state of mind. Your life will not miraculously improve on its own. Talk to your physician to find out if you need medication. But don't rely only on medication. Go the whole distance and take control of what you put into your mind.

A positive mind isn't an accident. It's something you do on purpose. Start living with intention and make your life better by putting good things into your mind.

Instead, you need to learn how to change the way you think, and emotions will naturally take care of themselves. Like night follows day, when your thoughts are healthy and positive, your emotions become healthy and positive as well.

HOW DO YOU CHANGE THE WAY YOU THINK?

How do you change the way you think? Three laws show you how to make it happen.

The battle against depression is fought on the battlefield of focus. In order to break the back of depression, you will have to learn how to persistently and consistently control the focus of your mind.

The journey out of the Land of Depression has many steps, but three of the biggest ones are to change your self-talk, change your direction of travel, and change your focus. If you don't change what you say when you talk to your mind, you will remain in the Land of Depression. If you don't change what you put into your mind, your life will not travel in a new direction. If you don't develop a positive focus, then a negative focus will remain in control. These three steps will not cure depression, but they will get you headed in the right direction, and you will get better.

BREAKING THE BACK OF DEPRESSION

Cognitive therapy gives you the power to break the back of depression by eliminating the twisted thinking that creates your distorted emotions. But getting rid of your cognitive distortions isn't enough. You need to go to the next level, a much higher level where there is no limit to how good your life can become. That next level can only happen if you install a positive operating system into your mind. Simply getting rid of your negative thoughts does not automatically make you positive. Getting rid of the negative only gets you half way to where you want to go. You must install a positive operating system if you want to reach the next level and become a positive person. It's not enough to stop being negative. You need to become a positive person.

You don't need a PhD in psychology or thousands of hours of therapy to win the battle against depression and to move up to the next level. But you do need to learn some basic facts. You also need an uncomplicated strategy that is easy to use. Finally, you need power. When you know the facts, have an effective strategy, and real power, the odds shift in your favor, and there is a high probability you will win this battle. It's going to be a dogfight, but it's a fight you can win.

You have a choice. You can allow negative thinking and depression to rule your life, or you can reestablish command and control over your thoughts and push your mind in a positive direction.

It's up to you. If you want to have a mind free from depression, nobody can stop you. Millions of people fight the same battle every day, and they win. You can do the same.
